Torrential rainfall and rapid snowmelt in April 2017 caused deadly floods northwestern Iran. An atmospheric river (AR), propagating across the Middle East North Africa, was found responsible for this extreme event. The triggered by precipitation warm advection associated with AR. A Concise History of Dutch River Floods

Based on a brief account of 1,000 years of river floods and flood management in the Dutch Rhine delta, it is argued that vulnerability to river floods depends on the complex interaction of economics, institutions, politics and, to a limited extent, climate. Response functions and thresholds for climate change impacts should take this complexity into account rather than assuming society to be co...

Controlling Yangtze River Floods: A New Approach

One of the most striking features of climate change in Asia is the change of the monsoon system, bringing new precipitation patterns to China. This has resulted in more flooding resulting from severe precipitation in southern China, and more droughts in the northern part of the country. Starting in the early 1980s, the Chinese government undertook research projects to better understand the risk...

Hydroclimate drivers and atmospheric teleconnections of long duration floods: An application to large reservoirs in the Missouri River Basin

A comprehensive framework is developed to assess the flood types, their spatiotemporal characteristics and causes based on the rainfall statistics, antecedent flow conditions, and atmospheric teleconnections. The Missouri River Basin (MRB) is used as a case study for the application of the framework. Floods are defined using the multivariate characteristics of annual peak, volume, duration, and...

Increasing river floods: fiction or reality?
